Note: This option is really is Do It Yourself—you’ll need to be reasonably tech proficient and willing to spend some time learning, if you don’t have those skills already. Our role is really coaching with this option—but at least you have someone to reach out to with experience in real estate websites.

Skills required to build DIY WordPress sites

In order to utilize the DIY option successfully, here are some skills we recommend you have, or be willing to acquire through research (yes, most of the information is available for free online).

  • Following directions to use a user-friendly WordPress installation wizard.
  • Downloading and uploading files.
  • Basic graphics editing skills (to create and/or resize your logo to upload into WordPress).
  • Very basic HTML and CSS editing skills (nothing major required here, but it’s helpful occasionally to understand some basics).
  • Persistence and patience. Sometimes building a site to get the exact result you want can be frustrating, even for professionals (depending on how unique your vision is). The successful DIY-er is willing to go back to the drawing board multiple times to learn what’s necessary to achieve the desired result.

Some additional costs you might encounter building your own DIY WordPress site

  • You’ll obviously need a web hosting account. We highly recommend RealEstaetProHosting.com, which has much better 24/7 support and features than GoD***y. We recommend purchasing the Unlimited Plan, which is $20/mo. paid annually. While a little more than GoD***y’s basic plan, you won’t be driven up a wall by them trying to upsell you every time you click. Everything is straightforward and simple, and you’ll have me as a resource to call if you get stuck.
  • You’ll need to purchase an IDX Broker account if you intend to have your listings populated on your website (personal, team, or office). This cost starts at $59.99/mo. and goes up from there based on if it’s just a single agent account, a team (two agents), or an office of various sizes (3-10, 11-50, 51-100, etc.).
  • Time. Your most important commodity is time. The DIY option, while cheaper to bootstrap when you’re starting up, requires you to spend precious time building your site when you could be out selling real estate or doing listing presentations. We think our prices hit the sweet spot of providing you the value you need for any budget, and saving you time. We’ve built quality sites of every kind for over ten years. Let us put our learning curve to work for you.
